Teaching Demonstrations August 3-4

Gentle Reader,

As we are wrapping up our teaching time here, we had our teachers share some demonstration teaching lessons with each other.  My students are all middle school teachers, and many of their students are beginning English language learners.  The lessons, therefore, focus on beginning language acquisition activities.

After each lesson, we processed how we could each use the strategies in our own classrooms.  My contribution was usually to add suggestions for expanding the lesson, often with more active participation from the students or more variety in the way the vocabulary is learned by the students.  I also suggested that the teachers connect lessons to other disciplines as often as possible:  adding graphing charts (math) to a survey on what students would order at a restaurant, using an actual skeleton in the classroom when teaching body parts, etc...  I had a hoot of a time adding songs to several of the demos, too:  "Dem Dry Bones" was added to a lesson on body parts;  "Here is Thumbkin" was added to a lesson on the secrets of one's hand.

All in all, we had a rip-roaring time sharing lessons, and there was grand laughter to accompany each lesson!  A good time, and a learning experience, for all...
