Still more to July 2nd.... Can you believe it????

For about three hours today, we made every attempt possible to get in touch with Li, the young Chinese scholar who lived with Scott the 2009 academic year.  Li recently graduated from college and now holds a management position at a factory in FuShon City, which is in Mainland China.  We contacted Li prior to leaving, arranging to meet him on July 3... which just happens to be Weird Uncle Scott's birthday! However, all attempt to make the final travel and meetings plans converged into a crazy town (yep, that expression is for Annelise and Allegra!) of a comedy of errors.

First, the Skype calling wouldn't connect, so we tried a SIM card that was supposed to make calling between Hong Kong and the mainland possible.  No go.  Didn't work in an IPhone or a Droid.  Then we tried calling Li's number through the hotel business center.  Whoever answered the phone wasn't Li, so that attempt was dashed.  Then we tried leaving an email message for Li, which involved having three hotel folks (technician, engineer, and housekeeping ) help us hook up the necessary transformer in our room.  We finally succeeded in getting the email sent, but Li has not been able to respond.  The bus and train links to meet Li are quite complicated and require reservations, but without our being able to reserve today, we are unable to visit Li at this time.  We are hoping to connect with both Li and Tian when we reach Guiyang!  In the meantime, we learned a whole bunch about how travel works in Hong Kong... and we were assisted by many kind and helpful folks.  The woman in the business office, who tried her darndest to get us through to Li, ended up telling us to save the unworkable SIM card as a "souvenir of Hong Kong."  And so it goes...

On our way to the 7-11 to get a SIM card, we spotted this wedding planning/photography place in the mall attached to the hotel.  This couple was engaged in selecting pre-wedding photos.
