...And this was a delightful little spot, just what we needed after walking several miles: The Public Square Street Rest Garden. As with the public spaces in the evenings in Turkey, men occupied all the recreational activity spaces in the evening. I was the only woman present in the Rest Garden, although there were no signs posted indicating that women were not welcome. As you can see from the photos, this is a quiet, restful place with ponds of water sprinkled throughout. Many men occupied this area, playing chess or checkers, often in pairs or small groups. Men would gather round the table to watch the matches, although there was no cheering or shouts of encouragement. Just a quiet space to come and just "be" in the evening...
